Statement

We always perceive things by their appearances and can only imagine what lies within. By studying lacquer art, I've come to contemplate both the exterior and interior aspects of things, realizing that exploring the interior deeply is a crucial foundation for my creative work. My works are shaped using mainly wood and dry lacquer, starting with the creation of the "womb" (*) as its base.

On top of this "womb," the exterior of the work is created using traditional lacquer techniques, repeatedly covering the surface. Lacquer ultimately forms a thick coating, yet each applied layer is remarkably thin with weak hiding power, revealing the "womb," the coating process, and more. It's a material that does not permit deception or lies. Eventually, I came to perceive the lacquer as transparent, seeing through to the essence of its existence. The beauty of lacquer art materials floating on the exterior emerges from deep contemplation of the "womb's" interior and the smooth connection of each subsequent step in the creative process, culminating in the work's surface appearance. This is what lacquer art means to me; it is my approach to creation.
